This isn't a film with a "solution" or an answer to Irene and Clare's differing takes on the world, but it is a deeply emotional film about struggling with identity and finding a place in a world that is often hostile and unsafe for minorities.
I feel like this is one I'll need to watch again.
"In 1920s New York City, a Black woman finds her world upended when her life becomes intertwined with a former childhood friend who’s passing as white."
Ruth Negga and Tess Thompson are the leads, and I thought they both did fantastic work. The actual words and actions of the characters in the film are subtle, but the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife from the opening scenes. The entire thing is shot in black and white, which is a nice visual play on the subject of the film. I think it does a great job of making you understand the feelings of both women--why Clare would be willing to do what she does to get away from the difficulty of life as a Black woman in the United States at this time, and why Irene finds it so upsetting. This isn't a film with a "solution" or an answer to Irene and Clare's differing takes on the world, but it is a deeply emotional film about struggling with identity and finding a place in a world that is often hostile and unsafe for minorities.
